The Angles in the Schoolyard program will be carried out in Ecole Sainte-Genevieve during recess periods as well as over lunch. The program consists of training 25 grade 5 students to become activity animators. The animators will design recreational activities that they can lead during recess periods for over 700 children in the school. They will be easily identified as schoolyard animators with special vests that they wear over top of their clothing. If they notice a child that is on their own they will invite that child to join their activity. The goal is to have no child left alone during recess periods. The second component of the activity involves training 15 grade 6 students to become ‘angles’ who mediate conflicts in the schoolyard. The angels will be easily identified with special vests and will circulate around the schoolyard during recess periods. When conflicts arise between students, the ‘angles’ will intervene with the children to resolve conflicts. The goal is to have students work out their conflicts in a peaceful manner without the use of violence. If the ‘angles’ are unable to resolve the conflict with the students, they will seek the involvement of the program coordinator.
