Stories that inspire
The Foundation of Greater Montréal supports hundreds of community organizations in every sector. Their work enhances the well-being of the entire community, including that of its most vulnerable individuals. All our gratitude goes out to the men and women who work day in and day out to bring a better quality of life to all.
Our thanks go as well to FGM donors and fund creators, whose philanthropic efforts bring to life the values they embody: solidarity, generosity and community engagement. It is through their commitment that the Foundation and its partner organizations can have a real impact on the well-being of Greater Montréal’s population. Here are some of their stories.
Doctors of the World Canada
In Quebec, about 50 000 migrant persons are not eligible to the free healthcare the government provides, including pregnant women, children and vulnerable seniors. These people suffer from daily social injustices, which have a detrimental effect on their health and even their survival. That is why Doctors of the World Canada has set up, in 2011, a clinic dedicated to such people. It allows them to obtain the healthcare, support and references they need. To back its multidisciplinary team of volunteer nurses, social workers and physicians in their work, the Trottier Family Foundation and the Foundation of Greater Montréal have…
La Traversée
La Traversée Social Services Center is an organization that welcomes asylum seekers. Its mission is to organize their accommodations and accompaniment through immigration procedures. Women, men as well as isolated or single-parent families are their users. To support them, the Trottier Family Foundation and the Foundation of Greater Montréal have granted $20,000 to La Traversée.
The Welcome Collective
The Welcome Collective is an organization whose mission is to mobilize the Montreal community in order to gather immediate human and material support for the most vulnerable asylum seekers in the city: "We aspire to a world of just, inclusive and caring societies, where racism and patriarchy are things of the past and where people can live free of the consequences of colonialism, exploitation and inequality in all its forms." To support those who join our community to flee oppression across the world, and in recognition of the invaluable work it accomplishes, the Trottier Family Foundation and the Foundation of…

The Hĕritage Afro Canada 2024 Fund (also called the Hĕritage 2024 Fund) is an initiative of the Afro-Canadian Cultural Center of Montreal. It was created at FGM in 2021 in support of the construction of an inclusive space in Montreal dedicated to the cultural expression of Black communities while fostering constructive intercultural dialogue. The Fund will help with the timely construction of the Centre to close out the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) and establish a legacy monument that will inspire and benefit generations to come. The Fonds Théorêt - Association québécoise des personnes aphasiques
The mission of the Fonds Théorêt - Association québécoise des personnes aphasiques (AQPA) is to create a community of belonging where people with aphasia receive services that promote their integration into society and where their loved ones are assisted in their support role. The AQPA created this fund at FGM in July of 2022, with a starting capital of $40,000. According to its members, "the Association québécoise des personnes aphasiques wishes to grow this capital by investing it through a philanthropic fund allowing a significant rate of return and an annual distribution of grants to help us fulfilling our mission…
Mikana
Mikana, which means path in the Anishinabe language, is an Indigenous non-profit organization whose mission is to work towards social change by educating different audiences on the realities and perspectives of Indigenous peoples. This initiative stems from a desire to generate concrete action against racism and discrimination against Indigenous Peoples and contributes to breaking down the barriers between Indigenous and non-Indigenous worlds. The Foundation of Greater Montréal is proud to support Mikana's work, through grants but also by using its services. The training sessions and education tools offered by Mikana indeed allow FGM's staff members to better understand the history and current issues members…
