A word from FGM – December 2025
As 2025 comes to a close, let us take a moment to reflect on an eventful year. A festive one, in which the Foundation of Greater Montréal reached a significant milestone by celebrating the 25th anniversary of its creation. A quarter of a century of being wholly committed to our community, highlighted through many initiatives over the course of the last twelve months.
In February, we launched the “You donate, we make money” campaign with the support of the Republik creative agency. Through a bold message, we brought to light FGM’s impact philanthropy model and reminded the Greater Montreal community of the powerful tools we put at its disposal to invest in its own future.
In March, it was our honour to welcome Janette Bertrand to the Ritz Carlton hotel to celebrate her centennial anniversary. This inspiring event, for the benefit of FGM’s Women’s Impact Montréal Collective Fund, both moved and mobilized those who work for the advancement of women and to make our community more inclusive and equitable for all.
In April, FGM’s former President and CEO, Karel Mayrand, addressed the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal in a key conference about impact philanthropy and the necessity of ushering systemic changes to answer the social and environmental challenges we face. Most notably, he stressed the importance of using philanthropic capital as a lever for development, for example through impact investing.
During our Annual General Meeting, held in May, we looked back at everything we achieved in 2024. This includes an exceptional gross rate of return of 16.1%, which reflects the soundness of our fund management and the brightness of our future. We also took this opportunity to highlight the crucial contribution of FGM’s pioneers.
As part of our ongoing support of Greater Montreal’s communities and their own power to act, we also deployed the 2025-2026 edition of FGM’s Collective Fund for Climate and Ecological Transition and announced its recipients. This edition of the Fund allowed us to learn about inspiring initiatives and mobilized communities, that are able to imagine a future built on social solidarity and ecological responsibility despite the complexity and gravity of the issues they face.
Stay tuned, because starting January 12 the 2026-2027 edition of FGM’s Collective Fund for Social Equity will open. Its main goal will be to support the emergence and continuation of collective spaces, places and resources that allow groups facing different forms of systemic discrimination to rest, to mobilize and to create solidarity.
In October, we celebrated our 25th anniversary with a special and memorable evening at Maison Alcan, which gathered about 350 guests. We marked the occasion by recognizing and paying tribute to the many people who, since 1999, have contributed in making the Foundation of Greater Montréal a major player in the social, cultural and environmental development of our region.
And in November, we unveiled the latest edition of the Vital Signs of Greater Montréal series of reports, which tackled the issue of philanthropy in Quebec’s Black communities. This essential publication aims to put the spotlight on contributions that remain invisible to many, and to spur philanthropic actions that better reflect the realities of the ground.
In 2025, the Foundation moved forward with conviction, renewing its commitment to Greater Montreal’s communities while looking to the future. Thank you for being a part of this special year. Let us keep working together to reinforce our community, today and for the next 25 years.
