Montreal, April 23, 2019 – The Foundation of Greater Montréal (FGM) has announced the projects that will receive grants under the 2019 edition of its Community Initiatives Program. The 47 projects submitted by charitable organizations working with children or youths in Greater Montreal aim to achieve various sustainable development goals (SDGs) such as food security, health and well-being, protection of the environment, quality education or peace, justice and no violence. Each project will receive up to $15,000. In all, some $640,000 will be distributed for the 47 selected projects. Click here for the complete list.

“These initiatives respond to issues identified in the 2017 Vital Signs report such as food security, school success and children’s health. We’re happy to support these organizations, each of which helps build a healthier and more just community,” said FGM president and CEO Yvan Gauthier. “We firmly believe that these projects will have a lasting impact on young people’s well-being. I’d like to thank and congratulate all the recipients.”

For example, Atelier 850, a charitable organization in the Little Burgundy neighbourhood of Montreal’s Sud-Ouest borough, will receive $15,000 to support its after-school homework assistance program. Every year, dozens of elementary school students from disadvantaged backgrounds receive personalized educational support that contributes to their academic success and self-esteem.

“Thanks to the FGM’s contribution, we will be able to offer our homework assistance program to the neighbourhood’s elementary school for another year. And last year, due to their support, we were able to expand the program and even eliminate the wait list. We’re so happy to be able to do this to help Little Burgundy’s children and community,” said Camille Vaillancourt, executive director of Atelier 850.

About Atelier 850

Atelier 850 seeks to limit the effects of poverty on children living in the Little Burgundy neighbourhood and surrounding areas by offering educational, cultural, artistic, recreational and social activities in a supervised environment. It also seeks to break their isolation and encourage integration, participate in their education by offering help with homework, improve food security, help them build self-esteem, and encourage community involvement.
