The pandemic has left vulnerable populations cut off from vital programs and services that they desperately need. Children and youth (0-25) have been especially impacted by the closure of schools, community centres and more recently summer camps. This pandemic has lead to a mental health crisis of vulnerable youth with no outlet to express themselves or access to the support they need. The proposed project seeks to break the sense of isolation experienced by these vulnerable populations during the pandemic by providing immediate and long-term mental health support through virtual platforms. Dawson Community Centre has launched several virtual programs thanks to an initial grant from the Fondation du Grand Montreal. This project has been well received and the need for ongoing support and intervention for vulnerable children and youth is more evident than ever. With the uncertainty of when regular programming can be resumed, we need to prepare for ongoing virtual programming that will provide the necessary mental health support for vulnerable children and youth through March 2021. Through 10 program sessions a week, we will provide mental health support to 100-150 vulnerable children and youth. Through this project children and youth will have access to individual listening and support services, group discussions and workshops, trauma-informed sports/fitness activities and mental health/wellness check-ins. When regular programming can safely resume, restrictions on the number of children in our building will have to be followed. Online programming will ensure that everyone who requires mental health support has access to it.
