Mécénat Musica program for cultural philanthropy

Mécénat Musica is a cultural program created by donors for donors, through the Fondation Mécénat Musica.

It encourages individuals to make an in-perpetuity donation of $25,000 to a cultural organization that is close to their heart, and also encourages philanthropic families to match such donations with gifts of $250,000 or $2,500,000.

Your cultural organization has to meet these six criteria to be eligible for the program:

  • Be a charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and be operating in Quebec;
  • Have or create an in-perpetuity endowment fund with FGM
  • Be eligible for volet A (component A) of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec’s Mécénat Placements Culture program
  • Have already received support from the “Endowment Incentives” component of the Canada Cultural Investment Fund (Canadian Heritage) or have submitted an application accepted by Canadian Heritage (exception: matching category D)
  • Accept Mécénat Musica’s terms and conditions  and sign the form that details them
  • The organization must not have received any subsidies from any edition of the Mécénat Musica program since 2013. The organization must confirm, by providing a copy of the donor’s cheque, or a proof of bank transfer, that its donors are either individuals* who have given $25,000 or more, or families that have given $250,000 or more.

* Tax credits: For an individual, the net cost of a gift of $25,000 in cash is $6,750 after accounting for tax credits, thanks to an added tax credit from the province of Québec for a major gift to a recognized cultural organization, which can only be used once in a lifetime. The net cost of a gift of $25,000 in public shares (where the value reflects a large unrealized gain) can be as low as $7,521. The calculation of the net cost after tax presumes that the individual resides in Québec and has a taxable income that is high enough to absorb the tax credits attributed to the gift. The organization can apply for one of the following matching grants: (A, B, E or D)

Matching grant of $25,000 or $ 50,000 offered by Mécénat Musica

  • A.1 If the cultural organization deposits in its FGM in-perpetuity endowment fund two (2) donations of $25,000* from two different individuals, Mécénat Musica will allocate a matching grant of $25,000 to the organization’s fund.

OR

  • A.2 If the cultural organization deposits in its FGM in-perpetuity endowment fund a maximum of four (4) donations of $25,000* from four different individuals, Mécénat Musica will allocate a matching grant of $50,000 to the organization’s fund.

Example A

Matching grant of $100,000 offered by Mécénat Musica

  • If the cultural organization deposits in its FGM in-perpetuity endowment fund ten (10) donations of $25,000* from 10 different individuals, Mécénat Musica will allocate a matching grant of $100,000 to the organization’s fund.

Example B

Matching grant of up to $100,000 offered by Mécénat Musica

  • D.1 If the cultural organization deposits in its FGM in-perpetuity endowment fund eight (8) donations of $25,000* from eight different individuals OR an amount of $250,000 from a family, or their company or their family foundation, Mécénat Musica will allocate a matching grant of $50,000 to the organization’s fund.

OR

  • D.2 If the cultural organization deposits in its in-perpetuity FGM endowment fund ten (10) donations of $25,000* each from ten different individuals AND two (2) donations of $250,000 from two different families, their companies or their family foundations, Mécénat Musica will allocate a matching grant of $100,000 to the organization’s fund.

Matching grant of $100,000 offered by Mécénat Musica

  • If the cultural organization deposits in its FGM in-perpetuity endowment fund six (6) donations of $25,000* each from six individuals AND an amount of $250,000 from a family, or their company or their family foundation, Mécénat Musica will allocate a matching grant of $100,000 to the organization’s fund.
