The Jean E. Douville Bursaries

Supporting the next generation in finance and commerce

Jean E. and Lucille Douville were already deeply involved in philanthropy when they decided to create a fund with the Foundation of Greater Montréal in 2017. “This solution not only freed us from administrative tasks,” they explain, “it guaranteed us that our fund would be managed in a professional way. We’re also able to keep abreast of any related activities, and, in consultation with FGM, direct income generated by the fund to recipients of our choosing.” Their choice will also ensure the long-term viability of the Fonds Fondation Jean E. et Lucille Douville.

An exceptional gift

But there is more to this story. On May 1, 2019, Mr. Douville announced an exceptional gift that would go towards the creation, in perpetuity, of bursaries. These were to be awarded annually to students in Commerce and Finance at three major institutions of higher learning in Montreal: Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business, HEC Montréal, and the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. For Mr. Douville, “supporting the development of our community is vital, and our universities are one of the best vehicles for doing that. I hope that these bursaries will contribute to the success of those who receive them, both in their studies and in life”.

Since the creation of the award, 42 bursaries, valued at $5,000 each, have been distributed. They were given to students who stood out through their efforts and their perseverance.  When they are chosen, special attention is paid to their life paths. Mr. Douville is very keen on supporting and encouraging diversity in finance and in commerce.

A real impact

For many, the bursary fulfills the vital function of allowing them to pursue their studies while reducing the associated financial burden. But it is also a gesture of encouragement that motivates them to keep going.

It has alleviated a tremendous financial burden that weighed heavily on me and my family. It has lifted the weight of worry and allowed me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies, knowing that I have a strong support system backing me. Your kindness and belief in my potential have given me renewed confidence and motivation to pursue my dreams.” – Deep Patel, Bachelor of Commerce, Major, Finance Co-op, Additional Major, Accountancy (Concordia)

This bursary will permit me to fully concentrate on my studies and reach my full potential while freeing me from financial constraints.” – Molka Fourati, student in Business Administration with a specialization in Finance (HEC)

This generosity and selfless support also strongly motivates students, as they continue on their journey, to envisage that they might someday offer the same type of support to other students.

It motivates me to do better so that one day I can do the same for other struggling students.” – Wahab Bashir, Bachelor of Commerce, Major, Finance (Concordia)
