Sharing the fun and desire of reading with children from disadvantaged backgrounds

Since 1999, The Gift of Reading (La lecture en cadeau) program imparts the fun and desire of reading to children aged 0 to 12 who come from disadvantaged backgrounds across Quebec. This initiative helps to build a special attachment with books and to prevent reading and writing difficulties that might lead to dropping out of school or even to illiteracy.

Every year, thanks to The Gift of Reading, thousands of children are given new, age-appropriate books. For a kid coming from a disadvantaged background, this book is often the first brand-new one they ever received. And they appreciate it even more because it was specially selected by a book-loving donor.

Sophie Labrecque, former President and CEO of the Fondation pour l’alphabétisation, first came out with this idea and led the project for almost 15 years. Thereafter, she donated to the program every year. In about 25 years since its inception, more than one million children have benefitted from The Gift of Reading. And it will go on, thanks to the generosity of the Fund’s donors.

Ms. Labrecque decided to create this in-perpetuity fund with FGM in order to offer continuous support for the program, but also other reading or literacy initiatives. In the same vein of this collective movement of goodness, Ms. Labrecque invites the entire community to donate to the Fund and warmly thanks those who will.

Congratulations and thank you to Sophie Labrecque for the creation of the Fonds Littératie !
