Femmes en emploi
In a few words, what is your organization’s mission?
Femmes en Emploi was founded by and for women, particularly those from immigrant backgrounds, who face greater challenges than women from the majority population. The organization has taken on the mandate of supporting these women throughout their journey toward employability, for a successful integration and advancement not only in the labour market, but also in Quebec society. Through a participatory and engaging approach, we also create opportunities for intercultural connection between native-born, immigrant, and racialized women. The decision to establish an organization led entirely by Black women in Laval is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am grateful to have helped bring together so many remarkable and dedicated women around a shared caus
In terms of employment, what issues need to be addressed to best support women’s well-being?
For too long, studies, reports, and conferences have clearly shown that women — whether native-born, immigrant, or racialized — unfortunately remain overrepresented in precarious, low-paying, and non-unionized jobs, with limited benefits and protections. Their contributions are still far too undervalued. For immigrant women, language barriers, the non-recognition of credentials, and deskilling are all obstacles to their integration and retention in the labour market. Women remain, to this day, a historically marginalized group.
How can the community help address these issues?
My observation in 2022 is that no one can claim to be unaware of the obstacles that native-born, immigrant, or racialized women may face. It remains true, nonetheless, that gender-balanced workplaces are the way forward.
Since I unfortunately do not sleep much, and as a result do not dream much, my commitment to improving the situation of immigrant women is a conscious choice, and I am well aware that it is not always a smooth road.
Like me, women and men within organizations, businesses, and public and private institutions fight effectively every day against the inequalities that affect women in general. These efforts are crucial and require genuine commitment from the community — and are, in fact, the key drivers of progress for women. As the saying goes, there is strength in numbers!
A tremendous thank you to you, FGM, for your concrete commitment to women!
