The Foundation of Greater Montreal celebrates 25 years of commitment

Montreal, October 22nd, 2025 – A quarter of a century ago, a group of socially engaged citizens and organizations—including Centraide of Greater Montreal, the Red Feather Foundation, the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal, and the McConnell Foundation—banded together to create a community foundation. 25 years later, what has become the Foundation of Greater Montréal (FGM)?

As of December 2024, FGM held more than $480 million in assets under management, boasted a 7.16% annualized rate of return over five years, and managed 800 funds. Since our creation, we have granted over $200 million to community organizations and initiatives across Greater Montreal in a wide variety of sectors, including culture, health, education, social development, the environment and more.

As a reminder, community foundations are charitable organizations that collect and manage philanthropic funds to address priority needs in their area. They also aim to make philanthropy a tool for progress, to bring community leaders together, and to support the development of innovative, lasting solutions to the challenges facing those communities.

Thanks to the vision and commitment of its pioneers, and everyone else who contributed to this collective project over the last 25 years, the Foundation has emerged as a major player in Greater Montreal’s philanthropic sector, but also as a leader in Quebec and across Canada. It aspires to transform philanthropy, notably through assertive strategies in favor of responsible and impact investing, trust-based philanthropy and participatory grantmaking, and a renewed pledge in support of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.

Quotes

“Our foundation is open to everyone. We are accessible, inclusive, and adapt to any cause or philanthropic project. We provide a space where people from all walks of life can pool their resources, talents, and ideas to uphold their values, support their community, and advance the causes they hold dear. In other words, the Foundation of Greater Montréal is your foundation”, said Karen Macdonald, FGM’s Chair of the Board of Directors.

“Our goal is not merely to collect, grow, and distribute money. We strive to make our philanthropic practices transformative: we aim to strengthen communities’ inherent power and to support the development of equitable, appropriate responses to the significant challenges we face”, added Marie-Andrée Farmer, FGM’s Interim President and CEO.
