Grade 4 and 5 youth actively participate in 10 weekly 2-hour after-school cooking and nutrition workshops – 300 youth annually from 15 NDG public schools. Priority for youth identified as food insecure, families in our emergency food program, or from four subsidized community centres. A pedagogical approach introduces concepts of healthy eating, food systems, food security, cultural foods, kitchen tools, hygiene, safety, cooking techniques. Tasting new foods, following recipes, healthy plate planning, home food challenges, help youth develop confidence. Children work collaboratively to prepare diverse recipes and take home a complete meal for their school lunch the next day. They monitor their own progress by tracking personal milestones and mastery of basic kitchen tools and food preparation techniques, and evaluate their experience. They connect with peers and learn values of cooperation and solidarity. Parents are encouraged to get involved through weekly home challenges and additional free complimentary workshops and food resources at the Depot. At end-of-session celebrations, children plan, cook and serve a meal to their families. Over 200 people attended this past session’s party! ‘I think everything tastes better when you cook it yourself, that’s why I eat more vegetables now-because we cook a lot at Boîte à Lunch’
