Montréal, May 14, 2021 – COVID-19 has seriously impacted our access and use of public spaces. At the same time, these are the glue to our communities. They are a major part of what makes them safe, vibrant and connected. They also constitute open and accessible gathering places for marginalized people. For the most vulnerable in our communities, these spaces often have an especially important significance. Enter the Healthy Communities Initiative.

The Healthy Communities Initiative is a $31 million investment from the Government of Canada. Its goal is to support communities as they create and adapt public spaces to respond to the new realities of COVID-19. The Foundation of Greater Montréal is proud to be working with Community Foundations of Canada and the Canadian Urban Institute, with the support of the Government of Canada, to support organizations that are showing creativity and resourcefulness in creating solutions that enable people to connect and access public spaces safely while still respecting public health measures.

And here at home?

The total share of the metropolitan area (Montréal, Laval and Montérégie) is $1.8 million, with available funding between $5,000 and $250,000 per project. As COVID-19 is still among us, the Healthy Communities Initiative is looking for innovative projects, which will reinforce the resilience of both our public spaces and the people who use them, while paying particular attention to vulnerable people who have been hardest hit by the consequences of the pandemic.
