Our Teen Fitness & Wellness Program is a six-month to one-year program geared to inactive teenagers between the ages of 12 to 17. The program is unique in Montreal because of its ‘three pillar approach,’ (physical, dietary, and mental), integrated use of technology, and length of the program, which will allows participants to form lifelong habits. First, the program helps participants identify physical activities they enjoy and will be more likely to continue to pursue. Every week, teens participate in two different activities – such as strength training, yoga, ‘Parkour’, hiking, aqua fitness, and indoor cycling by ‘Stages Flight.’ A kinesiologist supervises the sessions and adapts the activity for each participant. The program also provides the teens with their own ‘FitBit’ (wearable activity monitor). The program includes challenges to help motivate participants to reach daily and weekly activity goals. In addition, the program uses other technology, including group messaging, and photo and video sharing apps (WhatsApp, Snapchat), to encourage more integration of physical activity into their phone and social media usage. Second, the program teaches participants healthy eating habits. A nutritionist works at least twice monthly with the participants to learn how to read nutrition labels, measure portions, choose wisely at restaurants/groceries, and more. The nutritionist will also integrate technology, using calorie and nutrition tracking phone applications, as well as photo diaries to provoke and encourage ‘mindful eating.’ Finally, a child psychologist meets with participants at least twice monthly. She helps each teen identify their ‘stressors’ and develop strategies to manage stress, including using mindfulness. Teens also learn the best way to create good habits and change bad ones. The program includes time management techniques as well as goal-setting, which includes learning how to deal with setbacks or roadblocks. The psychologist also works with teens on their communication and relationship-building skills.
