This is the second phase of a project that began in 2018, through development of two gardens dedicated to native plant species, and Canadian heirloom vegetables. The gardens served as a teaching an employment space for disenfranchised youth who obtained internships as urban gardeners, growing their skills and knowledge and gaining work experience that would serve them in future employment. In 2019 we will expand the gardens, adding 300 extra square feet of garden space, several additional Indigenous plants, and by adding a cooking component, specializing in Indigenous culinary dishes. Youth will participate by building the new beds, giving tours of the gardens to neighbours and cooking and distributing the harvest through a new collaboration with Montreal Native Center. An Indigenous chef will be hired to teach participants traditional recipes and uses for harvest harvest and cooked dishes will be given to La Maison Ronde, Montreal’s only Indigenous Cafe. The impact on the community will be the development of neglected land, the positive exchange between different populations, the new skills and acquisitions by our youth, and access for families to safe green space. We estimate over 1000 people will be directly or indirectly impacted by this project.
