From Seed to City is an urban agriculture project, built on Innovation Youth’s expertise in gardening in a city, and in the cultivation of indigenous Canadian plants. By developing a brand new plot of land (of over 500 square feet) at Evangel Church overlooking Cabot Square, we will design an education and recreational urban garden, focused on indigenous plant species. It will be have seating and eating areas which will be put at the disposal of local families and residents in the area. Twenty vulnerable youth will be employed through a summer internship to build and maintain this garden and others. This internship will serve to build autonomy with youth who otherwise cannot find summer employment because of numerous barriers- intellectual, linguistic, social. Finally, we will work in partnership with the Cafe de la Maison Ronde, located in Cabot Square (very close to the garden) It is Montreal’s only indigenous restaurant we will therefore be planting a majority of native plants, herbs and teas which will be used in the La Maison Ronde’s kitchen. Through activities at the garden and in Cabot Square, we will be promoting First Nations agricultural practices and cuisine, aimed at educating our youth and the families of Peter-McGill. Planned activities include gardening sessions with children of the neighbourhood, workshops with Cabot Square’s native network on indigenous cuisine and plants, open taste-testing and cooking sessions for the Peter-McGill population, and regular garden creation, building, research and maintenance. The project’s targeted populations include twenty vulnerable youth employed at the garden, 150 families of young children in Peter-McGill who will benefit from harvest and pedagogical activities, and the Maison Ronde’s network of hundreds of clients and volunteers, who will benefit from an expanded green space and access to locally grown Indigenous plants.
