Participants choose topics for activities, and decide how they will be covered (informal talking circles, hands-on activities, outings, seminars). We make sure to use a variety of approaches to keep our programming fresh and engaging. Our workshop leaders and guest speakers are chosen for their knowledge and skill in communicating with our audience, and the Lead Coordinator ensures that interventions are age-appropriate. Participants are also accompanied by ‘aunties’ at each activity these resources are extended family members or community women who play a role in helping teenagers deal with the issues facing them. Kanien’keha language and cultural traditions permeate all of our activities, which may cover a broad range of topics of interest to our participants. We will hold 30 events throughout the year, in a number of accessible locations, mostly on Saturdays (3-hour sessions). Sessions may also last up to 5 days in the summertime (camping trip). Some of our events are geared toward small groups, while others may attract up to 30 teenagers. We make every attempt to hold zero waste events. We will also develop documents that will explain the Rites of Passage, for the use of participants this year as well as in upcoming programs.
