Théâtre Talisman

In order to broaden our reach to the overall English-speaking community, we wish to initiate the first of several plays aimed at specific minority groups. Our first initiative is an invitation to the Arab community, which represents 6.4% of the Greater Montreal population. The overall goal is to encourage theatrical dialogue between the various cultures in Montreal. This project is outside our usual annual production. We now wish to also exploit a new facet of Quebecois works, that which stems from Quebec’s minority population, in order to showcase playwrights who are writing about the concept of ‘other’ within the broad tapestry of Quebec culture. The February 2016 production of Walk Like and Egyptian! will be the English translation of the original 2010 play, which is a one-woman play that combines emotion and humour to depict a story about family, generations, authenticity and identity. To write this play, Mireille Tawfik was inspired by her double identity: Quebecoise, of Egyptian descent. Through the character’s story, she looks into the immigrant’s journey, its past and the values it wants to pass on to children born on new land.
